Upper Division Classes
Our Upper Division classes present the student with the increased rigors of classical training, emphasizing turnout, flexibility, strength, coordination, artistry and pointe work for the female students and aerial work for the young men.
Classical training is supplemented with classes such as Pilates, Character, Modern and Jazz. Upper Division students are expected to train during the summer for at least 3 weeks in either the Classical Ballet Academy Summer Intensive or a professional company’s summer program. This summer training is mandatory for participation in the Nutcracker production.
A select group of Upper Division students will be invited to join the Classical Ballet Theatre’s Company class. Students in the Upper Division are chosen to participate in some of the most prestigious professional summer programs in the country.
Intermediate I
Basic pointe technique is emphasized in each class. Students focus on placement, strength, flexibility and are introduced to the elements of artistry.
Intermediate II
Pointe work moves to the center. Quick complex movement patterns and technical challenges are stressed. Artistry, strength, flexibility, and placement continue to be developed.
Time Release
Our Time Release program is the most advanced ballet training we offer and is geared toward dancers wanting to pursue a professional career. Time Release students are allowed and encouraged to take unlimited classes above those required at their level. All Time Release students are members of the Classical Ballet Theatre Company which provides them many opportunities to perform throughout the year.
Character
This class will focus on the basics of ethnically oriented folk dance.
Company Class & Variation
The Classical Ballet Theatre Company class is an elite group of dancers from Time Release and Intermediate II who are taught variations from the great traditional Classical Ballets. Membership is by invitation only.
Pas de Deux
Select dancers will learn the basic vocabulary and techniques of dancing with male/female partners. Attendance is at the discretion of the director.
Modern
Taught by Megan Stipicevic, students learn the basic elements of Graham, Limon and Humphrey technique.
Jazz (Academy & Adult)
Taught by Margaret Leigh, (formerly Margaret Hansen) one of Washington’s premier Jazz instructors, students will learn choreography in the funk, lyrical and Broadway jazz styles.
